If you have a garage, you may find that over time, it becomes a dumping ground for everything that doesn’t quite fit in your home. From seasonal decorations to sporting gear or even furniture, it’s safe to say that your space can quickly become cluttered and overwhelming. With that said, if you simply adopt a few organisational strategies, you’ll notice how it becomes easier to maintain a functional space that can offer you both parking and storage solutions.

Utilise Vertical Storage

A lot of garages have an abundance of vertical space. If you’re not using it then this could be a game-changer. Use your walls efficiently, and you’ll soon find that it is easier for you to clear your floor. If you want to look into different types of vertical storage then consider installing shelving. Shelves are a simple yet effective solution, and they are ideal for storing gardening supplies, seasonal decorations and tools. You can opt for adjustable shelving, or you can opt for heavy-duty shelving. This is one of the best ways for you to keep sporting equipment or bulk supplies organised. Just make sure that you’re using the right fittings for your shelves, so they do not come crashing down.

Other options you have when it comes to vertical storage would be pegboards. Pegboards are the best way for you to store tools and gardening equipment, but you don’t have to stop there. You can easily use pegboards to store your bikes and helmets.  Overhead storage should also not be overlooked. Overhead racks are ideal for storing boxes of decoration, suitcases or even things like camping gear, as you probably won’t use things like this all the time, so having them out of the way will help considerably.

Clear Out and Declutter

Before you get too invested in maximising your space, it’s a good idea for you to go through all of your belongings and declutter everything. A lot of people tend to hang on to items that they don’t need, but if you take your time to go through everything then you’ll reduce what you need to store. Sort items into categories first, by having a sell, discard and keep pile. Be ruthless, and use the 12-month rule. This rule is a great way for you to reduce how much clutter you have, and it works by throwing anything you haven’t used in the last year, away. Decluttering your space is the best thing you can do if you want to create more functional solutions, as it allows you to see what space you have, and how you can use it efficiently.

Invest in Storage Bins and Containers

When you have gone through everything, it is then time for you to organise the things you intend to keep. Using clear storage bins is a good way for you to keep everything sorted out nicely. Use clear bins as this allows you to see the contents without having to open them. At the same time, you do need to label everything. Stackable bins are the way to go, if you want to save space.

Zoning is Everything

Another thing you should be doing is trying to zone your space. Instead of throwing everything together, you need to try and group similar items in different areas of your garage. By doing this you will not only help your space to appear more organised, but to also make things accessible. The last thing you want is to claw your way through Christmas decorations to try and reach your hedge trimmer when summer hits. Some suggested garage zones you can adopt, include a tools zone, sports zone and seasonal zone. This simple structure will make your life a lot easier.

Consider the Bigger Picture

When organising your garage, you need to consider your future as well. Are you going to need more space later down the line? Are there seasonal items that you can’t fit in your garage right now, but will need a place later on? If you consider the bigger picture then you will find that it is easier than ever for you to make decisions for now, but that also benefits you later on. Anticipating future needs, as well as current needs is one of the best things you can do here. For example, if you know you’d like to expand your family, then having somewhere to accommodate baby gear, or larger toys may be useful. If you know you’d like to expand your collection of DIY tools, then you’ll need to invest in enough storage to accommodate additions like this. If you’re buying a peg board, buy one bigger than what you need right now, and if you’re planning to expand your family, consider the best type of storage for what you think you’ll be investing in.

Flexibility is ultimately key when it comes to an organised space, so make sure that you opt for adjustable systems if you’re not sure what your future needs will be, and that you also invest in stackable storage so you can stop your garage from being cramped as you invest in more and more items later on. Little tricks like this are key to not only organising your garage but keeping it that way.
